The Big Steal

Well, it's been a long time! Sorry I have been gone for so long, but I took a break from southwestcouponclipper to help other family members with a business venture. I thought I could keep up with swcc, but I have learned through the past year that most people want to actually see the deals rather than for me to just post the where and how to. That takes a little more time to do and so due to time constraints and trying to keep the consistency of swcc, I was not able to post weekly savings while helping my family member's venture.

So I decided I am going to come back and do it right. My blog name is a little long and most people were being redirected from my domain southwestcouponclipper.com. I decided I was going to make the business change and that started with my registered domain redirection. Here is the surprise I got. My computer crashed and we changed from comcast to at&t. I thought that I had bought the domain for a 3 year period ( I was wrong). I actually only purchased it for 1 year and the reminder email must have gone to my old email address.

Long story long....... is that I just found out someone else bought my business domain and now wants to sell it back to me. ARE YOU KIDDING???? They also bought pretty much all other combinations of my blog's name. I now have to figure out what I want to do. There is NO WAY I am going to pay a dime to this company who bought my company name. What a jerk of a business. I will let everyone know what I come up with and what will become of the blog soon.

Okay....so it looks like Walgreens is the place to shop this week. I asked my husband what he wanted for dinner and he said, "You know, a big bowl of soup and a grilled sandwhich sounds good." WHAT?! The reason I stress the "what" is because my husband is the type that likes to eat 1 protein (grilled chicken or fish, steak, pork chops, etc...), 2 vegetables and a salad every night. Vacation Over....Back to the Savings!

Sorry for the lack of posts this past week. We were on vacation for a friend's birthday and it was beautiful.

While we were there it was funny though because my friend is not a coupon savings seeker. She noticed some sunscreen products I was using (posted here, here, here and here) and then noticed the price tag on one of them (banana boat).

She said, "Wait a minute, this bottle was priced at $11.47 and is marked for $2.87 so you only paid $2.87 for this sunscreen! I paid like $15!"

Unfortunately, I had to pour a little salt in her wound since she makes fun of my coupon savings sometimes and explained to her that actually I paid about 25 cents for each bottle of sunscreen after using coupons and register rewards. I then explained to her that I bought 3 bottles so actuallly she paid $45 for her 3 sunscreens while I paid less than a dollar for ALL THREE of mine!!!

She then became very interested in savings and asked me "Is it better to shop at Walgreens, CVS or Target? Who has the best pricing?" That small question turned into a little savings workshop during the middle of our deep sea fishing trip. Pretty funny. My answer was simple though. One is not better than the other and it just depends. If you can be flexible, look for store sales going on, match those up with coupons and stockpile items you use often, you will be amazed at how much savings are available at ALL your favorite grocery/drug stores.

It ended on a great note. She seemed a little savings stunned still not understanding how she paid $45 and I paid less than a dollar for the same items. It was like we set this up, but then she said, "I don't know, you will have to show me. Can I borrow some of your lip gloss?" She then laughed and said, "Oh, and don't tell me you got this for a dollar" I laughed and said, "No, actually, I got it for FREE (HERE)" .......She about fell out of her chair.

When and What to Stockpile During the Year

To Stockpile or Not to Stockpile? That is the question.

So a lot of people ask me if I have a price book and keep track of what I buy and when I bought it so I know what the "rock bottom price" is to start "STOCKPILING" an item. My answer is "No, I do not have a price book." I know that is definitely not super couponing style, but I pretty much have an internal register of how much I'll pay for something and when I think it is a great deal.

If you saw the news video I did Here on KHOU, you will notice that I spent "A LOT" on groceries before I started couponing. The story was not just about using coupons though. It was about being a smarter shopper. There are so many savings you can snag just by being a bit more organized and paying attention to store sales, loadable coupon sites such as Cellfire and Shortcuts, coupon match ups, printable coupons, etc.. and yes, STOCKPILING!

My friend who started couponing around the same time with me just said the other day that she still thinks about how much money she use to spend at the grocery/retail stores and cringes at the thought of all the money she wasted!!

She and I are now both aware that grocery store sales are cyclical and that there are definitely certain times of the year that some things are priced lower. What does that mean? It means that it's time to STOCKPILE!

Like I said, I have an internal mental register of what I think is a good price to buy an item, but a friend of mine emailed me this list she saw and when she thinks the best times are to stockpile.

January - Party items, sodas, chips, diet items and paper plates
March - Cleaning supplies and frozen food
May - Mexican food and Mexican condiments
June/July - Condiments (mayo, mustard, ketchup, bbq sauce, marinade), marinades, napkins, paper plates, plastic cups, popsicles, ice cream and frozen treats
August -Back to school supplies
Oct - Dec - Baking supplies, flour, sugar, chocolate, shortening, Holiday items and treats (candy, ham, turkey, pie, etc..)

After I saw the Neosporin lip deal at commonsense, I thought what a great way to use the $5/$25 CVS coupon you can get HERE and have $10.78 worth of free products to get you closer to your $25 total. But it gets even better.

When you go into CVS scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center machine. Sometimes it will print out $2 off 2 Gold Emblem Nuts and $2 of $10 worth of CVS products. It did today!

UPDATE: A couple of readers have left comments that they did not receive the $10 catalina and were told that the promo was over. The cashier or service rep is INCORRECT. I did the deal this morning around 9:30 and again at 2:20 (I will post later). It lasts thru the 18th. If you do not receive the $10 catalina WHEN YOU BUY 7 or 8, go to customer service and have them do a dummy sale where they scan your randall's card and purchase the 7 joint juice and it should print out the $5 off 7 coupon catalina and the $10 catalina once the transaction is COMPLETE. I've done the deal now numerous times and did have once where the catalinas did not print out. I went over to customer service and she told me that 1. the deal must be over and 2. it is because I used a catalina to pay for it. (funny since I had already done the deal 2 times) I asked her to please do a dummy sale on a different register. She did and what do you know...the catalinas printed out. I did the deal at least 5 times after that and like I said did 2 more today.

Okay what is funny is that after my son's football game tonight I thought I would stop by Randall's again today to snag more cleaning products while the B1G1 deal is going on. I'm not sure if it continues next week (I'll find out tomorrow). I did the exact same transaction in transaction 1 below that I did early today HERE in transaction 2. What's funny is that my total is different. (.25 versus .66). They calculated the tax differently and the only thing different is the order they processed the coupons. One receipt deducted -.72 in tax and the other deducted -.31. Very bizarre.

Okay so I posted the Joint Juice deal HERE the other day and had not gotten around to going to Randall's. Then I got a heads up on how to sweeten the deal by Stephanie HERE. It is my birthday and I thought that I would pass on all the savings today until I remembered that I had a rain check at Randall's for joint juice (.80/each) and it expired TOMORROW!(how lucky is that ) Also, so I don't get a lot of angry emails thinking I wiped out the store. The stocker told me that they had more cases in the back. To be honest this deal is so awesome I probably would have shopped at Randall's all day, but I had to meet some friends for my bday luncheon.

I don't have a lot of time to enter the fruit, veggies, frozen veggies, steaks and chicken breasts (all the meat had 30% off peelies on them), but this is how the joint juice helped reduce my bill.

When I checked out at Randall's the other day a man asked me if I wanted his Catalina. He told me that he did not have any children and maybe my children's school could benefit from his receipt. When I looked at the bottom of it I saw the message "10% goes back to schools" and a redemption code.

I told him thanks, went home, logged in on the website and this is what I found out.

For three weeks starting on September 18th a redemption code will be printed at the bottom of your receipt at participating stores (Safeway, Carrs, Dominick's, Genuardi's, Pak 'n' Save, Randall's Food Markets, Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy, Vons and Pavilions). Pick a school to get 10% of your total at the end. Visit this site before October 13th to choose your favorite participating school. Then simply enter your redemption code to make your donation. You can also give the bottom of your receipt (with the redemption code) directly to the school you've selected.

Return to THIS SITE between the dates of September 18th and October 13th to start redeeming your receipts, follow the steps below:

Identify your organization
Enter the redemption code found on the register receipt tapes
Return to this site as often as you wish to enter additional register receipt tape codes

Registered eScrip families will receive an automatic deposit to their account via the regular eScrip payment process.

I entered the redemption code from the catalina the man gave me and an automatic $2.90 was given to my school. How easy and simple was that?! We have approximately 500 students at our school and I thought, "Wow, if everyone entered their receipt redemption code during the redemption time frame our school would rake it in!"
